What is Pilates?

A miracle? Not really. A safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your best no matter what your age or condition? Absolutely.

"It is the mind which builds the body." — Joseph Pilates

In 1923, German-born Pilates brought his unique method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States. His study of yoga, martial arts, Zen Meditation, and Greek and Roman exercises, as well as his work with the medical profession, led to the development of this unique and unparalleled method of exercise.

What will Pilates do for me?
Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels, and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility, and economy of motion. It trains the whole body, coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s center. The result is muscles that are long and strong.

The Pilates method of conditioning:

  • develops a strong “core”, or center of body
  • elongates and strengthens
  • flattens abdomen and strengthens back
  • develops muscle elasticity and joint mobility
  • creates an evenly balanced, conditioned body
  • increases flexibility and agility
  • trains efficient patterns of motion
  • develops acute kinesthetic awareness
  • improves the mind-body connection

No other exercise system is to gentle on your body while giving it a challenging and rewarding workout. By developing proper technique, you can actually retrain your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion. This type of controlled muscle patterning is invaluable to injury recovery, sports training, and overall health and body maintenance. Your entire body is evenly balanced and conditioned, allowing you to meet lifestyle goals and enjoy daily activities and sports with greater ease and less chance of injury. Emphasizing flowing movements that require the use of multiple muscle groups simultaneously creates a beautiful balance between strength and flexibility, resulting in total equilibrium.

This extraordinary method of exercise works muscle groups interdependently and in an integrated manner, thereby increasing range of motion and improving coordination. Exercises are synchronized with a coordinated breathing pattern, generating aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuromuscular rejuvenation. A total mind, body, spirit connection…

“In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you will have a whole new body.” - Joseph Pilates
