What is Pilates?
A miracle? Not really. A safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel better - no matter what your age or condition? Absolutely.
"It is the mind which builds the body." — Joseph Pilates
In 1926, German-born Joseph H. Pilates brought his method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States. His work with injured soldiers in WWI, dancers in NYC, and all other walks of life led to the development of this unique and unparalleled method of exercise, which he called Contrology. His background in England focused on rehabilitation, and Pilates today incorporates movements appropriate for every body.
What will Pilates do for me?
Pilates transforms the way your body looks, feels, and performs. It teaches body awareness, good posture, and functional, efficient movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility, and economy of motion. It trains the whole body, coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s center. The result is muscles that are functional and balanced.
The Pilates method of conditioning:
- develops a strong core or center of body
- strengthens abdominal and back muscles
- develops muscle elasticity and joint mobility
- creates an evenly balanced, conditioned body
- increases flexibility and agility
- trains efficient patterns of motion
- develops acute kinesthetic awareness
- improves the mind-body connection
No other exercise system is so gentle on your body while giving it a challenging and rewarding workout. By developing proper technique, you can actually retrain your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion. This type of controlled muscle patterning is invaluable to injury recovery, sports training, and overall health and body maintenance. Pilates allows you to meet lifestyle goals and enjoy daily activities and sports with greater ease and less chance of injury. Pilates emphasizes flowing movements that require the use of multiple muscle groups simultaneously, and it creates a beautiful balance between strength and flexibility.
This extraordinary method of exercise works muscle groups interdependently and in an integrated manner, thereby increasing range of motion and improving coordination. Exercises are synchronized with a coordinated breathing pattern, generating aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuromuscular rejuvenation. Pilates is a total mind, body, spirit connection…
“In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you will have a whole new body.” - Joseph Pilates
